Non invasive facelift with HIFU
HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a relatively popular procedure for patients who want to tighten and lift their skin without the risks of surgery. First discovered in 2008, it has come a long way in aesthetics medicine. Now, HIFU has been approved by FDA for use in brow lifts and improving lines and wrinkles over the upper chest (décolleté). Several clinical studies has shown that HIFU treatment is safe, effective and most patients are able to see results in 90 days after treatment.
As its name suggest, HIFU uses ultrasound energy to target layers of our skin just below the surface. It gently heats up the underlying tissue without causing damage to our superficial skin. At the same time, this stimulates our skin cells to produce new collagen, a protein which provides structure to our skin. Therefore, the increase in collagen production results in a tighter and firmer skin, with lesser wrinkles. Besides treating the face, HIFU is also a popular treatment for body skin tightening and contouring (see picture below).

It takes time for our own body to regenerate collagen. You should see gradual skin tightening effect over a period of 2 to 3 months. Some patients continue to see improvement up to 6 months.
HIFU treats the deep foundational layer in our skin – SMAS layer (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system). This is the same layer of skin that plastic surgeons tighten in a face lift surgery. However, it does not replicate the results of a surgical facelift. It is a great alternative for those who are not ready for surgery or those who want to extend their results after a surgical facelift.

We use Ultraformer 3 at Arium Clinic. Compared to Ultherapy (a well known brand of HIFU), Ultraformer 3 is known to have higher patient comfort, produces good consistent results and more versatile in treating both face and body.
The best way to know is to consult a doctor who is familiar with HIFU Facelift. He or she should be able to assess your skin, customize your treatment according to your needs and provide advice on your expected results.
We will apply numbing cream to the skin about 30 minutes before we begin. You may also be given some oral painkillers to take to reduce any discomfort. During the procedure, you may feel a gentle heating sensation when the ultrasound energy is being delivered to precise layers of your skin. This is an indication that the procedure is working and is generally well tolerated by most patients.
It depends on your treatment area. A face and neck procedure typically takes 30 – 45 minutes, while a body treatment may take about 45 – 60 minutes.
Most patients do not experience any side effects. Some patients may see a mild skin reaction such as redness or hives which lasts a few hours. You may encounter slight swelling, discomfort, skin sensitivity or mild bruising over the treated area. These symptoms resolve on its own within one to two weeks. A doctor can better assess and explain the potential side effects to you in person.
Most patients will see results after a single treatment. However, patients with more obvious skin laxity may benefit from additional treatments in 3 to 6 months. As our skin continues to age, future touch up sessions may be needed. On average, most patients repeat treatment in 6 to 12 months’ time.
