Laser Hair Removal

Who is suitable for laser hair removal?

Unwanted facial or body hair can affect how you feel about yourself, what you wear and what you do. You may have sought many means and ways to remove those unwanted body hair. In the past, people have tried plucking, shaving or the use of bleaching creams. Most of these methods produce temporary results and in no time, the hair grows back. You are suitable for laser hair removal if you are fairly light skin, have dark hair and looking for a longer lasting solution.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser emits light which is absorbed by the melanin pigment in our hair. The light energy is then converted to heat to vaporise the hair follicle. Over time, the destroyed hair follicle has reduced growth and eventually stops growing after repeated laser sessions. This is a safe and effective procedure which can be performed quickly with minimal downtime. Commonly treated areas include the face, underarms, bikini lines, chest, abdomen, upper and lower limbs.

How laser hair removal works

When will I see results from laser hair removal?

Hair grows in cycles and it takes time to fall out from its follicle. Laser hair removal targets hair follicles in the active growing phase. The number of laser sessions and its interval is dependent on your hair density and its location. Repeated sessions are needed to see the best results. Most of the times, you will see noticeable results after 4 to 8 monthly sessions, but results may vary for individuals. For more customized hair removal solution, you can consult our doctor who can assess your treatment area and provide better advice for your condition.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?

IPL is the short form for intense pulse light. It emits a broad spectrum of light which is less targeted, compared to laser. They are commonly marketed at low prices at beauty salons because their devices are often non medical grade, unlike laser. You will probably end up paying more for IPL hair removal because of the need for more sessions. If used under the wrong hands, IPL carries higher risks of burns, blisters and scars, especially in darker skin patients. Some patients do not see results even after multiple sessions of IPL hair removal. Hence, they decided to switch to laser hair removal.

How should I prepare myself for the laser hair removal?

One month before your treatment, you should avoid any method of hair removal which involves pulling out the hair follicle, such as waxing, plucking or epilation. An intact hair follicle will have better results from laser hair removal. Similarly, you should avoid excessive sun exposure on your skin before your treatment. Wear a broad spectrum sunblock if you need to be out in the sun. Trimming or shaving the hair one day before the procedure is ideal. This removes the hair above the skin, while leaving the hair follicle intact.

What happens during laser hair removal?

Try to shave your hair 1-2 days before treatment day. On treatment day, a numbing cream will be applied on your skin for 15-20 minutes. You will wear protective goggles to protect your eyes during laser. You may experience a mild pinprick sensation as the laser targets your hair follicles. In addition, you will feel a cold sensation from the cooling device at the tip of the laser hand piece. This will calm the skin and reduce redness post laser.

Are there any side effects from the treatment?

It is generally a very safe treatment. You may develop temporary redness and swelling around the hair follicles. This will usually resolve a few hours after the procedure. If you develop any skin reaction to the laser, our doctor will prescribe a mild steroid cream for your home use. Like all laser procedures, there are very low risks of pigmentary changes or burns to the skin. You can minimize your risks by wearing a sunblock daily and avoiding a suntan.

Who is not suitable for laser hair removal?

You are not suitable if you have light hair colour such as gray, red, blond or white.  These hair colours do not absorb laser light energy very well. Laser works well in dark hair colour with high levels of melanin. We also avoid treating areas with tattoo as laser may interfere with the tattoo ink. Last but not least, we try to avoid laser procedures during pregnancy as there are no studies to support its use.

Will you have regrowth of hair after the treatment?

The results from laser hair removal are fairly long lasting, but it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. If there is any regrowth, it is usually fine and lighter in colour. This is acceptable to most patients. If unfortunately, you do experience excessive regrowth a few years, you may need to return for maintenance lasers. Our doctor will review and discuss with you on the number of sessions needed.
