Hair Loss Treatment

You should seek hair loss treatment early

When should you seek hair loss treatment?

Every day, we lose an average of 50 – 100 strands of hair. Hair fall is a natural phenomenon as our hair follicles renew themselves through a regular growth cycle. But how do we know if we are losing way too much hair? This is a very subjective problem. The general advice is that if you notice any bald patches or see clumps of hair falling out, you should start to see a doctor. This is because you may be losing hair as a result of treatable medical conditions such as anaemia, lupus or thyroid disorder. Our doctor will be able to diagnose and rule out these conditions before prescribing a suitable treatment for you.

How does laser hair loss treatment work?

It uses low level laser therapy (LLLT), often in the spectrum of red light, to stimulate the growth of hair follicles. LLLT is widely used in medical science to promote tissue repair and regeneration. For example, it is used in the treatment of wound healing, nerve regeneration and joint pain relief. A study done in 2013 has shown that LLLT is effective to produce a 39% increase in hair growth over a period of 16 weeks. Another study done in 2014 has also shown that LLLT is safe and effective to treat hair loss in both men and women.

Science behind laser hair loss treatment

When will I see results from laser hair loss treatment?

As hair loss does not occur overnight, the results from hair loss treatment will not be visible immediately. Your hair follicles need time to grow and regenerate. In most cases, you should see a noticeable change within 8 – 16 weeks of regular treatment. When you have attained your desired results, we will formulate a maintenance program, customized to your needs. At the same time, we encourage you to use hair loss shampoo and vitamins for optimal hair health.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am the suitable candidate for this treatment?

The best way to know if you are a suitable candidate is to consult a doctor who has experience with treating hair loss. You will be a suitable candidate if your hair loss is not related to any underlying medical condition such as anaemia, lupus or thyroid disorder.

Does this treatment work for post partum hair loss?

Post partum hair loss occurs as a result of hormonal change within our body. Most mothers experience this temporary hair loss which improves within 6 to 12 months. During the initial months following child birth, treatment may not be necessary. However, if your hair loss persists after this period or is worsening, you should consider seeking medical treatment.

    What happens during the treatment?

You should arrive at our clinic with a clean scalp on the day of your treatment. Do not apply hair care or styling products which may hinder the absorption of laser on the scalp. We would apply a medicated hair spray to your hair follicles. Before treatment, you will be given a pair of protective eye goggles. A standing lamp which delivers low level laser therapy (LLLT) will be placed over your scalp for the next 15-20 minutes.

Are there any side effects from the treatment?

It is generally a very safe procedure. There are no risks of burns to the skin and there are no long term side effects.

Who is not suitable for this treatment?

You are not suitable for this treatment if you have been diagnosed with a tumour or thyroid disorder. We will avoid treating areas with tattoo as LLLT may interfere with the tattoo ink. In addition, we do not administer LLLT during pregnancy as there are no studies to support its use.

What are the other options if I do not see results?

It depends on the cause of your hair loss. Male pattern hair loss can be treated with oral medication such as propecia. Minoxidil hair spray is also a common prescribed treatment for both male and female pattern hair loss. If your hair loss is extensive, you can also consider the option of a hair transplant.
