botox

Many patients are reluctant to get botox treatment for their wrinkles. They often tell me they heard that it can leave their faces frozen and fear that the same will happen to them. Let me share with you what are some of the common myths and the truth behind them.

Myth 1 – Botox is a toxin and only used in the cosmetic industry

Botox is a neurotoxin derived by Clostridium Botulinum. It has been used for almost 40 years since the 1980s. It has also been used medically for the treatment of eye twitching, excessive muscle contractions, chronic migraine, teeth grinding and sweaty underarms.

Myth 2 – It gives you a frozen look

One of the most common misconceptions is that treatment will leave them with an expressionless or frozen look. In the hands of an experienced doctor, you can expect a natural and more youthful appearance.

Myth 3 – It can treat all wrinkles

Botox is only able to treat expression wrinkles as it works by relaxing our facial muscles. Deeper wrinkles which are present at rest are not easily treated by botox alone. Hence, it is essential to treat wrinkles at an early stage to prevent the formation of deeper lines.

Myth 4 – If you stop doing botox, you will age faster

If you choose not to continue with treatment, your wrinkles will return. However, you will still look younger than you would have if you had never been injected. So you should not be aging faster.

Myth 5 – Once you start doing botox, you will be addicted

It is not possible to be physically addicted to Botox. As people benefit from the boost in confidence with their youthful appearance, they may want to continue receiving treatment over long term.

Myth 6 – The effect is immediate and permanent

After injection, you will not expect to see immediate results. It takes 3 to 5 days for your wrinkles to improve and the best results are only visible in about 2 weeks. For most people, the effects wears off in about 4 to 6 months. It is not permanent.

Myth 7 – Botox is only done by celebrities

This is not entirely true. As the price of a botox injection is becoming more affordable, more women and men are getting their treatments done.
